UCSC Institute of Arts + Sciences
UC Santa Cruz - Institute of Arts and Sciences
Santa Cruz, California
O|CB is a member of the winning competition team for the new Institute of Arts and Sciences, with Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. This new interdisciplinary program will operate as a nexus for innovation in exhibition making, teaching, research, creation, and public interaction. The site of the Institute is near the geographic center of the UC Santa Cruz campus, on the edge of two dramatic landscape extremes: the bright, expansive, and outward-facing meadow and the cool, dark, enclosing redwood forest. The naturally occurring transitional zone between these landscapes—the ‘Oak Ecotone’—is a human-scaled and micro-climatically comfortable, with an over-arching canopy that casts a filtered, dappled shade. The winning competition scheme proposes an integrated Institute building and site that occupies the Oak Ecotone and makes spaces that frame, contain and reveal—providing numerous social places for people to occupy, and vantage-points where they can enjoy stunning views of meadow, ocean and forest. Landscape spaces include terraces, plazas and courtyards for gathering, art making and art display. New oak grove planting will define and provide shade for pedestrian circulation and gathering.
