459 Geary Street Gallery
San Francisco, California

Art meets landscape at this new San Francisco art gallery and private penthouse with roof terrace.

A seven-story renovation located in the heart of the Union Square Art and Theater neighborhood, the project is a modern expression of art and city - from the public business of a gallery to an artist’s private dwelling. The landscape begins at a subterranean courtyard where a two-story trellis creates a three-dimensional garden space from an urban remnant. It provides a counterpoint to the double-height gallery space within, bringing warmth, comfort, and night lighting to a rotating mural exhibit.

At the penthouse, a sense of terra firma is created against the elevated city backdrop. Trees and grasses are planted flush with the ipe deck, creating a private, urban oasis. A focal point both inside and out is a Coral Bark Japanese Maple specimen tree which was conceived as a living sculpture for the artist.  O|CB Principal Meghen Quinn completed this project while at Quinn Landscape Architecture.
